A Last Word, Before You Turn To Go

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

  3. I sense "fierce tears" here. Hope you, anf loved ones, are all right.

Love, love, love that poem. In my NYC days I used to hang out where he hung out (The White horse Tavern).

  4. And yet the night comes anyway, not caring whether we rage or go gently.

  5. My ex-husband who frequented the White Horse in Greenwich Village, knew Dylan.

By all accounts, he buffered himself well against the dying of the light with many, many comforting libations which ultimately hastened that good night.

There has never been a better poet and I wish I had known him, too.

    Miss Molly,

I just love this poem and decided to post it. Isn't it something! OH I wish I could write like that.
    Maybe I'd better practice more!

    Clowncar,

Thanks for the concern, things are good. No tears.

Ah for the days of poets and rebels... I wish I could have known him, too. Isn't he amazing?
Time does not diminish his work at all.

    Jules,

Doesn't it though? That's so profound. It comes anyway, and in its own time and way. Still, it's a great poem.

    My dearest Hearts,

Wish I'd known him, too. Very sad death. Thankfully we are left with some of the depth of his heart and mind.

    Minx!

    So excited to see you!
I agree with you both. Just fabulous. And I *love* that poem.

  8. Excuse me.
Did you just say, "I have a cold today and heart surgery tomorrow????
    Am I missing something?

Then I am poking around on Minx's and see a similar mention of heart surgery like it's nothing...

Pardon me while I scream on your blog.
    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

    OK.
Now we need to know what is happening.
    Are you OK??

    *smile*
Yes, I did have a cold and it's nearly gone, thank heaven.
I went in for heart surgery but it did not go so well. We'll see what can be done. I am alright.

Thank you very much for the concern. -hugs-

    My dear Vanilla,

Isn't he something else? So very deeply moving.

  12. Please tell me that things are better now. Being a guy and therefore clueless, I didn't pick up on Your emotions as did the other commenters.

    Will You be all right?

  13. You are a talented writer. I came to your blog through the black box. I like your decorated lion. We enjoy visiting The Outer Banks, NC. They have painted horses everywhere, similar to your lion. Intriguing, life-sized.

  14. Scarlett, I'm worried now. Are you all right?

The poem is magnificent, but I find it very difficult to read because of all the sadness that it brings to my heart.

    Be well, dear Scarlett!
