Submarine Races

One of the lesser known but extremely popular sporting events here in Denver are the annual submarine races.
It's a very special time, as the lakes that are big enough for the submarines to race in are only thawed for a few weeks at the end of July, and here we are at that time again!

It's quite a thrill to experience it, and I am so glad that I could share it with you.

I was very lucky to capture this impossible shot, just at the moment that the Nautilus eclipsed the nose of the Seawolf and won the day. Go Captain Nemo!!

....what?
It's a submarine race, what were you expecting to see?

I have never heard of a submarine race till today!

Thanks for that bit of knowledge :)

Wish the camera could see through water :P

Casino... please play elsewhere. No spamming here, it's a cardinal rule, and those don't get broken.

Sameera!

Em... honey, it's a joke. Denver is 5,280 feet above sea level, the mountain lakes are much higher up than that and not nearly deep enough for a sub.
But it's a fun idea!

Scarlett,
We had a different interpretation of submarine races when I was growing up:
"Watching the submarine races" is a euphamism for making out (and more) in a car. It's the kind of thing a cop would say to be funny when he knocks on the fogged-up window of your chevy parked in back of the safeway to ask what you're doing there at 1am, as if he doesn't know damn well.
Cop: Hey, what're you kids doing in there? Watching the submarine races?
People in car: Gak! Where are my pants?

Rel!

*GIGGLE* That's SO funny, I had no idea people used submarine races as a euphemism like that... for that... so funny!
Thanks!

Scribblers Inc.,

Welcome!
I think submarine races are a novelty altogether... but a lot of fun to joke about!

Lena,

But where would the spectators watch from?
;o)
I wouldn't mind being IN a submarine race, that would be fun!

Mystique Wanderer,

Nice to have you here, welcome!
That sounds exactly like the kind of story I would love. I wonder if Google would have more info on it?

Dearest Vanilla Bubbles,

Hmm. Hadn't thought of that! Bubbles and mini subs... yay! Then we'd know for certain who was winning!
Very delighted to see you here, thank you for visiting.

LOL! Anytime I hear "submarine races," I think of a make-out point where couples would go to "watch the races." Don't know where I first heard that, but now I'm wondering who you were "watching the races" with? ;-)

Vesper said...

You've had me for a moment there! Ha! Ha! Ha!

But I understand why you couldn't have done this on April Fools day.
:-) :-) :-)

Wanderlust Scarlett said...

Hey Christina!

I wonder if that's a regional colloquialism... Rel said the same thing and he's on the other coast.
As for those of us landlocked in between... submarine references are uncommon, so this is new to me.
;o)

Vesper!

It's been too long since we had you here. Nice to see you about!
I had you going? Really?
That's good! Glad you got a laugh out of it.

Hah! Love it! I was cheering for the Nautilus!

FWIW, I had never heard of watching the submarine races as a euphemism either. But it sure is funny that you picked it for your little joke....

"Want to go watch the submarine races?" was the best pick up line in history.
East coast, New Jersey... famous for its submarine races and its gullible women.

Wanderlust Scarlett said...

Hello Michelle!

Well, since it's fiction and games, of course I wrote the Nautilus as the winner. I have a deep sea soft spot for Cpt. Nemo and his sword of the sea. It's a classic!
;o)

Leslie,

I'm beginning to see a trend here with the sub-wording and sub-liminal references... hee hee...
but glad that you told us about Jersey!

When I was a teenager, the "submarine races" was a euphemism for driving at night to the local beach where many babies were conceived.

Wanderlust Scarlett said...

Dear Heart,

....so I've heard, since posting this. Funny thing, that.

There is other terminology for it now that I won't put on my blog because my blog is PG rated.
