This is a special story about one man. Meet Jason.

Jason, like thousands of people across our country, is homeless. The day I visited with him, he was homeless in Santa Fe, sitting on the sidewalk on San Francisco street, just outside of a Starbucks coffee shop.

I was hurrying past him to go from one appointment to the next and I saw him out of the the corner of my eye, sitting there with his hand on the dogs leash, holding his guitar, staring at the sidewalk from under the low brim of his weathered hat.

I was compelled to stop. "What songs do you know?" I asked with a smile.

His voice was very quiet. "I just play my own stuff."

"Could I please buy a song from you, sir?" I knelt down before him.

He picked up his chin and his guitar, and played a tune for me. We visited for a while. He said he's been all over the country, from Florida to LA and the toughest part of being homeless is finding a dry place to stay.

The rain that has curled his hat has also washed the words off of his guitar, and his hopes and dreams right away with them.



How do you get up out of that hole? Where do you go from there?
On to the next town.
The road does not stop.

The problem of homelessness in this country does not stop.

There are efforts made here and there, by local churches, by independent groups and by individuals who want to make a difference, but it's like painting a house with an artists fine tipped paintbrush.

Our leaders have not yet found a solution to this issue, but some are trying. There must be more effort, more decision, more action to make it happen. If you live in the states, contact your leaders; your mayor, your city counsel people, your senator and your governor and tell them that this must change now. There are solutions for every situation that people are willing to change.

Someday your road will lead you home, Jason.

When was your last encounter with the police? Chatted with a few of them in passing at a car show recently.

The last place you went out to dinner? Piatti's Italian Restaurant in Cherry Creek, YUM!!! Love that place.

Do you like your name? I like all of them.

What time of the day is it? Thismuch closer to closing the office.

Who/What made you angry today? I've not been angry today.

Do you want anyone? Of course! Who wouldn't? I want my family, I want my friends, I want a good president this time, I want a masseur for an hour, this list could get long.

Favorite holiday? Okay... my UK buddies have written their favorite vacations in here, but in America this has a different connotation: My birthday and Christmas are right up at the top. Yes, my birthday is a holiday to me.

Do you download music? No

Do you care if your socks are dirty? Absolutely! Yuck! I usually wear exotic sandals so I don't have to worry about this.

Opinion of Chinese symbol tattoos? It's your body.

What are you doing tonight? An art walk with some friends. Several galleries, one street, probably a glass of wine in there somewhere and a Denver sunset on the Rocky Mountains.

Do you like to cuddle? Very much.

Do you love anyone? Of course! Who came up with this question? Can you imagine not loving one single person?

Whose bed did you sleep in last night? Mine

Have you ever bungee jumped? No way! I like living on the edge, but not when I'm tied to it.

Have you ever gone whitewater rafting? Yes! Did some of my best praying then!

Has anyone ten years older than you ever hit on you? Yes. I am plagued with what I have termed 'the dirty old man syndrome'... The oldest was in his 80's. Now, really... what's the point?

How many pets do you have? Just Viaggiatore; he travels well, and he's a fantastic muse, so it's perfect.

Have you met a real redneck? *wicked giggle* - OK, my darling sister, if you are reading this, skip to the next question.

How is the weather right now? Gorgeous. 80 degrees and sunshine; Colorado is the most perfect place in the world for autumn.

What are you listening to right now? The work radio; which isn't on my favorite station but it's not bad.

What was the last movie you watched? The Emperor's New Groove. So funny.

Do you wear contacts? Sometimes.

Where was the last place you went besides your house? School! Mid-terms! Blegh!

What are you wearing? Jeans. My favorite perfume. A smile. Berry red lipstick. Dark red nail polish. A special ring that my parents brought me from Belize. A Japanese style cotton button up shirt. Dark eye liner and mascara. An ankle bracelet from Africa. Exotic suede sandals with gold fabric, gold beads and sparkly clear stones.

What's one thing you've learned this year? Patience... lots of it.

What do you usually order from Starbucks? I don't go often, I like small single owner shops, but if I find myself at a Starbucks then I usually like a Caramel Macchiato... with tons of caramel... really, it winds up being a dessert.

Ever had someone sing to you? Yes! It makes me blush and swoon with a big grin.

Have you ever fired a gun: Yes. As it turns out, it's not something I am good at.

Are you missing someone? Always. Go back up to that do you want anyone question.

Favorite TV show? I don't watch TV but I did like She-ra when I was a kid.

What do you have an obsession with? Just about everything... ocd will do that to you.

Has anyone ever said you looked like a celeb? Yes, several people.

Who? I get Ashley Judd a *lot*, some Geena Davis and some Drew Barrymore. I had platinum blonde hair one year and all I heard then was Marilyn Monroe. Actually, I think Ashley looks like me.

Who would you like to see right now? The list is far too long to put here.

Ever had a near death experience? Yes, more than once. Not one word about my driving, for those who know me.

Are you afraid of falling in love? As long as it's true love, no.

Have you ever been caught doing something you weren't supposed to? Oh Absolutely! I joined that team when I was a teenager and have even been the captain a few times! Following the rules for your whole life is a blatant waste of good opportunity.

Has anyone you were really close to passed away recently? Thankfully, no.

What's something that really bugs you? I detest being interrupted.

Where is the weirdest place you have slept? The theatre; only happened once. Just a *really* boring performance, but I'm still embarrassed as I consider that a monumental gaffe.

Who did you last speak with on the phone? A Jaded girl I know.

What does your last received text message say? "In 2009 the US government will start shipping retards away. I started to cry when I thought of you. Be strong, wear your helmet and run fast lil buddy!" My friends thrive on twisted humor.

What's the closest orange object to you? That little publish post button. Orange? Who thought of this question? Random!

What’s the first thing you wrote and you still have?
~Really? Kindergarten work, I think. I still have the first journal that I ever wrote in, from the summer that I lost my grandmother, and when I reread it, it's like stepping back in time.

Write poetry? Yes!

Angst? Only when I was a teenager.

Favorite genre of writing? I love thinking on paper the best... start writing a thought and keep writing whatever crosses my mind, non~stop for as long as I can go at it. Very good exercise.

Most fun character you’ve ever created? Viaggiatore - paws down.

Most annoying character? Eh... I haven't created an annoying one, but my best villain is Vincent William Kilman. Nobody knows who he is yet, but he is wicked evil; couldn't believe someone like him came out of my head.

Best plot? The story that Vincent is in... it's a mystery/suspense/adventure/romance/comedy blend. Think "Jewel of the Nile" and "Romancing the Stone" ...gone techno and current, in Greece, Egypt and Vienna... intertwine past and present internal stories, throw in a missing princess, a 'chance' couple to fight the good fight and solve the mystery, a goofy sidekick for the hero, a supportive friend for the heroine, a wicked evil villain, memories of a tragic love story, a dangerous race against the clock and the bad guys and you just about got it.
...Good plot? Yes!

Write fan fiction? I have no idea.

Type or write? Both methods with both hands (although my left handed writing isn't quite as fast as my right handed writing). Which one? Depends on topic, moment and mood. Journals are written, thoughts are written, communication is mostly typed, but I do stop to write it by hand sometimes. It's nice to get something hand written in the mail.

Favorite thing you’ve written: Whatever touches other people's hearts, makes them smile and means something to them... or compels them to do right, whenever I can have an effect.

Do you show people your work? uh... yes... I blog. I also show good work to teachers, fellow students, friends and family. It's very important to look at it from a different perspective, whether I agree with that particular view or not. It opens my mind up more.

Did you ever write a novel? Two, actually.

Favorite setting for your characters? In my hands; not out of them.

How many writing projects are you working on? Ad Infinitus Continuum

Do you want to write for a living? Yes.

Why? To touch the hearts of humanity, to make a difference, to enlighten, to enjoy, to learn & grow, to laugh, to cry, to empower, to compel... to bring passion and peace, and to comfort.

Ever written anything in script or play form? Yes, once... a very long time ago. I'd forgotten till just now.

Five favorite words: ...A new day has begun... (note, these are not 5 single favorite words, they are 5 favorite words together, and together they mean possibility and opportunity for anything and everything... it means I've been gifted with one more day... what is better than that?)

Which character most resembles you? The lead in my second novel... Anna... she resembles me because she is me, and many, many other girls and women in the world.

Where do you get your ideas for other characters? If I knew that, I'd take up permanent residency there.

Ever write things based on your dreams? Yes! Mustn't forget those...

Do you favor happy endings, sad or cliff-hangers? Yes! Do you favor more than one kind of food for the body? I favor more than one kind of nourishment for the mind.

Ever written anything based on an artwork? Absolutely! As a writer, I am inspired by a great many things, not the least of which is the product of anothers inspiration.

Are you concerned with spelling and grammar as you write? Of course! I'm concerned with it when anyone writes, especially me! It's one of those pet peeves of mine... the fundamentals of the English language are going down the drain! While I'm not necessarily bothered by the people who speak incorrectly, the evidence of poor education producing poor language skills in their communication drives me right up the wall!

Ever write entirely in chatspeak? NO.

Thing One~ Life Isn't life something else? The tides of our own time that pull and push us, that tear and soothe us, that carry us ever onward until they carry us away... washing the past away like sand from the shore while it refreshes us anew every day. I passionately love all of the nuances of life... all of the wonderful joys, glorious love, fiery anger, bubbling laughter, echoing solitude, cocooned comfort in the arms of someone trusted, searing pain, enlightening learning every day, humbling forgiveness, overwhelming excitement, and even all the deep sorrows... how could we know just how good the good is without measuring the depth of the bad? And don't the lows make the highs SO precious... when we know just what they are worth? Every minute of our lives is something new to be savored and experienced to it's fullest, to be given it's ultimate possibility, whether simple or great, and each minute passes silently through us and we are changed, again and again.

Thing Two~ Family and Friends I never want to know what life would be like without them. These are part of the foundation of my existence.

Thing Three~ The "Using my only wish to wish for more wishes" trick: Chocolate, tea, prayer and meditation, sleeping in, holding hands, good books, equality, corvettes, good music, good hugs, airplanes, cameras, kindness, good weather outside, being inside when there is bad weather, performing arts, thick warm blankets and soft pillows, flowers, ferris wheels, sunrises and sunsets, forgiveness, the ocean, some art, planetariums and all the things we can see when we look through a telescope, dancing, surprises, red nail polish, bubbles, holidays, seasons, leaving footsteps in new places, libraries, letters/cards and packages in the real mail, teaching someone something that will be of value to them.

ExSkin Diver (a new friend and fellow member of The Shameless Lions Writing Circle) has sent me an interview! 5 questions... and she left almost no stone unturned; these were a bit of a challenge!

Here are your Five questions:

1. That list you have in your purse of 25 things you want to do before you die...what are the top 10?

1. Get pilots license (almost done with that)
2. Serve a mission/serve in a 3rd world country for 1 year helping build communities and teaching (not yet... but soon)
3. Learn to play piano/organ - check
4. Visit Disneyland/Disneyworld - check
5. Go back to college (2nd tour) - check
6. Travel the world - partly checked (France, England, New York, Massachusetts, Florida, California, Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Kansas, South Dakota, Cabo San Lucas, Washington)
...I think I got them all... hmmm... still have most of the world to get to!

2. You say that you are a good friend. If that novel that you are about to finish (one more chapter right?) makes a good friend of yours (who happens to write too) unhealthily envious...would you share your novel's success with your friend? Or would you dial down its success to spare your friend's feelings?

I would do neither. The obvious answer (and the wrong one) is to 'dial down' it's success to save my friends feelings... but really, this does a disservice to us both. If my friend is jealous, there is a reason; likely an insecurity on their part that needs to be addressed, not petted. If I know of an insecurity, I would never ignore it and pretend that things are fine, I would try to help them overcome it... help them with their writing, help them see the value in what they create - any product of creativity is produced from within us; from pieces of our souls, and that makes it invaluable. One is not better than the other, they're just different. The focus and my support would be turned to their efforts, not mine. Giving my friend compassion, understanding, patience, love, support and encouragement would be the best way for me to be a true friend.

3. Japan, Egypt or Ireland--where would you like to go first and why?

You're killing me. OH ouch. Probably Japan (I have some friends there), Egypt (fascinated with it's history) and then Ireland - (oh for the castles and countryside...) preferably for 6 months at least in each place. Siiiiiiiiiigh.

4. You seemed to have cured yourself of road rage. Aside from prayer do you offer your readers any other advice for living well?

Emm... well, not cured, but definitely cut way back. There's enough hate and anger out there in the world today, I do not want to contribute more to it. Perhaps if I am kind, it will be paid forward. Living well - YES!

a. take good care of yourself... oftentimes we think we should put our families and others ahead of us, but if we do that, then who would they rely on when we fall sick or aren't giving 100% because we don't have it to give? sleep good, eat healthy, dress well, exercise, meditate (prayer, quiet time, whatever... give your mind some 'away' time too). Not only does this give us the strength and energy to care for others, it is an excellent role model for our friends and families... people learn behaviors from watching not from listening. How many of us would tell our children 'do as I say, not as I do'... change that. Show them how you want them to be by
living it yourself.

b. speak positively - always - India Arie sings a song called 'Get it together' in which she says "because the words that come from your mouth, you're the first to hear. Speak words of beauty and you will be there. No matter what anybody says, what matters most is what you think of yourself" The idea is that whatever comes from you... comes out of you, originates from within. When we say something mean, or crude, or crass... when we swear... the ugly things that are uttered come from inside us and reflect who we are. Most of us are a lot better than that... show your best side when you speak - you do a disservice to yourself if you show anything less. Let go of those things inside you that are not who you really want to be, you are the master of your future... you own it, it's all yours. You write it. You make it. You do it. Blame no one else. Speaking positively all the time (or at least as often as possible) keeps your mind in a positive state, improves your mood, and improves the moods of those around you. There's not really a downside!

c. forgive yourself & forgive others - we are all human, fallible as a consequence of birth. We make mistakes. Sometimes the wrong that we do is intentional and then we regret it later. Carrying guilt around in your heart does you no good, nor does it benefit anyone else. There is no benefit to guilt, not even to one who tries to give it. If you are sorry for a wrong you've done, say you are sorry - not expecting forgiveness, only because you truly are sorry. Apologize and then walk away. If you are forgiven, great! If not, it is irrelevant. Is your apology contingent on it's acceptance? It shouldn't be. You are admitting a mistake, it's up to the other person to accept it or not, and that has nothing to do with you; you did your part, you said you were sorry... let the guilt go and be at peace. Dragging guilt around with you only weighs you down and holds you back. Don't do that to yourself, no one is going to save you from it. You have to let it go... and walk away.

d. laugh often, love much, forgive always (even if you don't forget - these are two totally different things) and choose to make some of your dreams happen, even if they are just little ones.

5. In your 4th painting called "Tuscany" is there a metaphorical meaning behind the 4 cypress trees on the right? Please share.

I laughed at this a bit. There is no relevance in the four trees. They are just four Cypress trees. The relevance in the picture is the connection of the whole place, the land connected to the sky and the water, the roots of the tree in the land that are so deep they reach beyond the sea, the vines of life that grow beyond their boundaries. In the 'worn frame' I painted are the ages of time that have held it all together, somewhat faded in places, but solid and strong, lasting. Simple, beautiful, all connected... all the parts are one, like everything in life. Humans, plants, animals,
from an atomic level to the very obvious... it's all the little things connected together that make a whole. Spirits to atoms to cells to tissue to bodies to human kind and far beyond.

Here are your questions:

(1) What is usually the last thing you do before you go to bed at night?

....before I go to bed, I sip hot tea and write in my journal.
....before I go to sleep, I close my eyes and talk to the Lord about my day and His ideas and our tomorrow and things like that. Then I fall asleep while I am on the line with him. Makes for better dreams too... usually.

(2) If you could live anywhere in the world, no cost/language/partner/other prohibitions, where would you end up and why?

Really? Wow. The pressure... I guess I'd have to say Italy. Ideally, I'd like to live all over the world in many places for short times, but the plan is to wind up in Italy for the resting years and watch the sea roll in and eat pasta and gelato, sip good coffee and read, write and paint... and look at fine art forever. To walk the paths of history that are miles deep in that land, and grow a vineyard and some olive trees. If I don't kill them first.

(3) Do you consider yourself crafty? (Interpret as you wish).

Hmmm. Merriam-Webster defines crafty as: skillful, clever, adept in the use of subtlety and cunning, or marked by subtlety and guile. I would say that I am this way sometimes. I am definitely not this way all of the time... as there are those occasions when I think of the perfect comeback or witty joke three days after the conversation... sigh...
but sometimes, lightening strikes and I say just the right thing, or do just the right thing at the right time... and things work out my way. The contingency is that the craftiness has to go hand in hand with honesty.
Honesty does not however, have to go hand in hand with rules. I am most certainly a rule bender. I am the president of the Bubble Bandit Brigade, after all, and the rules regarding fountains and bubbles are by definition, meant to be bent. Is that crafty? Yes.... yes, I believe so.

(4) If you could only drink one other thing besides water for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Sognatrice... these are tough questions. I'm torn. Damn.
Coffee... I can have it hot or iced. No wait... tea (again... hot or iced)... oh... wait, chai tea... uh... hmmm. ehhh.... chocolate?

(5) The Brady's or the Partridge's? *or* ER or Grey's Anatomy (or both if you like)?

Well, I don't watch TV, I haven't had cable for going on oooh probably 7 years or so; I can't stand the ads and I think the content rots my brain. BUT, I have heard raves about Grey's and ER... just haven't seen them. However, if the choice were between the two in that list that I have seen (Brady's and Partridge's), I'd definitely have to go with Partridge's. They are considerably more interesting and talented, much better looking, and far less annoying. Plus I like Shirley Jones. It's a Music Man thing.

**final note, I am usually all over the map like this on decisions, you should see me ordering in a restaurant or on the phone with take out... yikes! Just one of those Scarlett traits. Whaddayagonnado.
